These are my experiences with the eight types of mass media:
1. Books: As an English major, I read literary fiction. As a child, my favorite series to read were Junie B. Jones and A Series of Unfortunate Events.
o
Likes/Dislikes: I like to read
printed books instead of e-books because I get distracted when I read on a
computer or electronic device (the internet beckons me).2. Newspapers: As a kid, my favorite section to read in the newspaper was the comics section. Now, I receive the local newspaper in the mail and I read articles that catch my attention with an interesting headline.
o Likes/Dislikes: I like printed
newspapers for the same reason I like printed books. I also like to use old
newspapers to cover the table when I paint or use clay with my younger sister.
3. Magazines: The only place I read magazines is in the doctor’s office while I wait for an appointment. In the clubhouse area of the complex I lived in, there were National Geographic magazines that I used to read. I am currently subscribed to a magazine called W, which I received as a gift for a purchase. However, I prefer to read informational magazines rather than ones that address fashion.
o
Likes/Dislikes: I like the pictures
and articles in the National Geographic magazines.
4. Movies: I am subscribed to Netflix and I own many Disney DVDs. My favorite animated movie is The Lion King, which I first watched while I was still living in Fiji.
o
Likes/Dislikes: I love to watch
movies, but I do not like to watch them in 3D or IMAX as they give me
headaches.
5. Recordings: When I was a toddler, I would dance to Michael Jackson songs that my parents played for me. CDs and cassette tapes were my primary sources for music when I was growing up. Now, I upload music onto my iPod with the program iTunes.

o
Likes/Dislikes: My iPod makes music
accessible to me as I can take it wherever I go. I do not like the prices of
songs on iTunes; thus, most of the time, I listen to songs by using the Youtube
app on my iPod.
6. Radio: I do not turn on a radio unless I am in the car. Since I commute for 40 minutes to and from De Anza, I listen to the radio more often now.
o
Likes/dislikes: I like to change the
station if I do not like the current song. However, I do not like it when 3
stations play the same song or when a station plays the same song multiple
times in one day.
7. Television: I watched a lot of television when I was growing up. The Powerpuff Girls, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Recess were some of my favorite shows when I was a child. But, I do not watch television as often as I used to. The only television programs I watch now are the local and world news, and a few shows.
o
Likes/Dislikes: I record the shows I
watch so that I can fast forward the commercials. I do not like the feeling of
having many channels and not being able to find something that interests me.
8. Internet: The internet is the medium that I use the most. I created my first email when I was in the 7th grade and I watched my first Youtube video when I was in the 8th grade. Prior to those experiences, I did not use the internet often. Now, Youtube is my favorite website to use.
o
Likes/Dislikes: The internet makes
information easily accessible, but I do not like how distracting or addictive
it can be.
Good specific examples. I like the IDEA of 3D and IMAX, but they give me a headache too, and they seem gimmicky.
